The bravery, resilience, and wisdom of moms

posted May 11, 2018

I am a mother who has had an abortion. There are many other mamas out there who have had abortion experiences as well. In June 2016, along with four other mothers, I was featured in a Parent’s Magazine article highlighting stories of our abortion experiences and what we have learned about ourselves as parents before and after that experience.

The comments shared on the article illuminated that mothers who read the magazine may belong to communities where abortion conversations are not normative or open-hearted. This led to a lot of reflection on my part as a mother and an activist working for a more just, loving, and supportive world. How do we support mamas who have made decisions we do not understand or agree with?

So this, my first Mother’s Day as the Executive Director of Exhale, I'm asking you to join me in celebrating the bravery of mothers and mamas and parents of all shapes and sizes who have abortion experiences. Your donation will be matched up to $10,000.00 through a generous gift from the Mary Wohlford Foundation and an anonymous donor.

In the U.S., Julia Ward Howe is credited with creating the platform for the first Mother’s Day celebrations, which held the eradication of war as its principal stance, standing with mothers who lost their sons in the Civil War. She nursed the wounded on both sides, and offered support to widows, mothers, and orphaned children. She saw the great pain of war first hand and recognized that its reverberations continued for generations.

With all of the pain and division in the world, mothers possess hope for a rebirth. We are forging new paths with a strong commitment to the transformation of self and humanity. We do the hardest job imaginable and trust that we can overcome challenges and resist fears to raise a new generation of peacemakers and healers.

Many of us mothers have also had abortions. We have faced the depth of soul-searching reflection to make a decision for self and humanity.

This Mother’s Day, we invite you to join us in celebrating the bravery, resilience, and strength of moms who have made this decision in a world where sexism creates intense stigma upon women’s bodies and agency. This week we will be featuring stories of the mothers we know, and how their abortion experience has informed their approach to motherhood, so be sure to follow us on social media.

Here are a couple of ways that you can support the work we are doing with individuals who have abortion experiences -- especially mothers:

  • Click on this link and add to the list of the qualities you love about the mama(s) you are honoring, and we will share a word cloud with all the messages at the end of the week.
  • Make your donation to Exhale today to support our work in eradicating abortion stigma. When you make a donation, we will send you an image to share in celebration of the mamas whom you love.
